Hi. I had the same decision to make when I was starting my online business so I know what problems you are facing.

At first I used paypal, but then my sales were increasing very quickly and I knew I needed to switch to a merchant account/payment gateway setup to handle the larger volume.

I came across this website, and they really helped me learn a lot. There's plenty of information on their pages and I discovered so much about how all this works with processing credit cards. Their FAQ section is definitely worth a look.

I'm not recommending you sign up with them in anyway, but I did contact them and was able to get all my questions about merchant credit card processing answered from a real live person. That was pretty cool.

I eventually went with a different company, but at least I was armed with much more knowledge than when I first started.

I'm thankful to say that my business and sales have been doing well and making the switch was, to me, a good choice. You'll have to determine for yourself if and when you will make the switch.

One thing though, if your volume of sales is not enough to cover the costs of processing fees, then I would go with paypal and just wait till it does.

Hope that helps and good luck!

What type of Verifone? If you're talking about a Tranz 330 you'll need to go with punch cards. If you have a 3750 you'd have a hundred choices. Which model will you be using?

Only certain newer terminals have the capability to read gift or reward cards - the amount of info is too much for the older terminals to read.

For more info about gift and reward cards, I can be reached at or through the Yahoo contact option above.

Yes. Most customers, especially women (who are more afraid of muggers than men are), do not carry enough cash to make purchases in a boutique. If you do have any customers while you are cash-only, you should also expect to be robbed at gunpoint, because you will have so much cash on the premises.

It's very important to your cash flow.

Assuming you have an internet collection and computer at your location, PayPal offers Point of Sale services for around $30 a month...so you don't have to buy expensive machines to process charges.

It's a good idea for business purposes . Business need to be as flexible as possible . further more it is a good idea to have credit card machine for security purposes too . If you don't have cash on the premises the less likely you will be robbed .also it is proof that the customer actually purchased the items from your store or the person

It is very simple to operate credit card processing machine terminal equipment. If your merchant account services provider doesn't give you full on technical support and training you might want to look into a new provider. The operations on a lipman nurit 2085 are very basic and stated right on the keyboard of the unit. you simply navigate the menu for either a credit or debit card transaction. Then you simply swipe your credit card and the machine does the processing for you. You will be prompt to enter the amount of the credit card transaction. Once you enter the amount of the sale you will then hit the enter button and the credit card machine terminal will dial out and process the authorization. The credit card terminal machine will print out a receipt for the customer to sign and then you can hit any button on the point of sale (POS) equipment to print out the customers copy.

For more information on Lipman products go to

If your are asking about the accounting entries, the rules are given below for your reference.

Rule 1
Debit what comes in. Credit what goes out
Rule 2
Debit the Expenses. Credit the Income
Rule 3
Debit the Receiver. Credit the Giver.

A sample entry is given below for payment for XYZ expenses using credit card:-
Dr XYZ expenses Rs 5000
Cr Credit Card a/c Rs 5000

Next, when you make payment (or deposit cheque in your Credit card a/c), the entry would be:-

Dr Credit Card a/c Rs 5000
Cr Your Bank a/c Rs 5000

Remarks:-
1) XYZ expenses ledger to be opened under group "Expenses Indirect"
2) Credit card a/c to be opened under group "Bank OCC a/c"
3) Your Bank a/c to be opened under group "Bank a/c"

In this economy, a credit card machine is a must. Sometimes you have to adjust your prices to cushion the usage fee you will incur from the credit card processor. You shouldn't anticipate any profit when you first open doors, be happy with breaking even.

Is your POS terminal online? via LAN line {regular dial up} or DSL? If you are preparing yourself to accept credit cards, debit cards gift cards you must have your terminal pre-programmed from your merchant bank.

The software must be set to your business needs by the provider {merchant bank}. Contact your financial institution and let them know you would like to activate the terminal to accept all types or selected choices {this is up to you} of cards.

I suggest you get the credit card machine as soon as possible.

Personally I tend to carry very little cash and don't like writing checks. I literally put everything I can on my credit card each month, and then just pay it off when the bill comes in.

Since the majority of businesses accept credit cards now, I sometimes go weeks without having a dollar in cash on me. I just don't often need it and prefer not to have to carry it.
